Why did you name your business Sixpence Collection?

Most people have heard of the good luck wedding rhyme 'something old, something new' but did you know that there used to be an additional line?

"Something old,

something new,

something borrowed,

something blue,

and a silver sixpence in her shoe."

Traditionally, a silver sixpence was given by the father to the bride to put in her shoe before she walked down the aisle. This coin was a symbol of the father's wish for good luck and prosperity for the new couple. This tradition inspired the name of my business, Sixpence Collection!

Something Borrowed, Something Blue: Interpretations of the Rhyme

Something Old – represents the couple's life before marriage, carrying their past into their new life together.  This is typically a family heirloom given to the bride for her wedding day, often in the form of jewellery like a ring, necklace, or locket, which is either worn or included in the bouquet.

Something New – represents the beginning of the bride's new life and the future she will spend with her partner. It serves as a token of hope for the couple's long and happy future together. Any special item the bride has purchased for herself or received as a gift to wear for the first time on the wedding day can included. Common examples are wedding shoes, the wedding dress and the wedding ring.

Something Borrowed – is an item borrowed from another happily married couple. It is intended to bring good luck to the couple and joyful years ahead. Examples might include the wedding veil, a pen for signing the marriage certificate, a hair clip or cake knife.

Something Blue – in the wedding rhyme symbolises love, purity and fidelity. Traditionally, this was represented by a blue garter worn beneath the bride's wedding gown, but nowadays there are numerous modern ways to incorporate 'something blue' into a wedding. Blue wedding shoes, blue dresses for the bridal party, a blue hair clip or charm on the bouquet or a something blue wedding handkerchief, also useful for those happy tears.
